sound installation:
"Xuanchuan" by Vincent Dee

The Mandarin word, "xuanchuan" loosely translates to "propaganda." In this piece, the artist examines the DRC's historical practice of appropriating traditional Chinese folk songs to convey its rhetoric more effectively, juxtaposed with China's ongoing adoption of Western, consumerist culture. He does this through paring Western pop hits with interpretations of the traditional propagandist rhetoric.

elevator music

the:artist:network presents a quicktime video of site-specific multi-channel sound installation by Hong-kai Wang, "Elevator music" (2006) from the !@#$% Group Show.

As the elevator travels through the shaft, sounds appropriated from various subway buskers drifts in and out of ear shot. The juxtapositioning of the buskers' soundtrack compose an orchestration of "Muzak" for the everyday passengers.

Born in Yunlin, Taiwan, Hong-Kai Wang has been living and working in New York since 1998. Her works have been exhibited in Howl Festival, Yokohama Triennial among others.
