"people around me"
sonoko mitsui

exhibition: september 24 - october 23, 2004

the:artist:network presents the second exhibition in conjunction with the nagoya university of fine arts in japan. the network will host an annual exhibition / residency program for a postgraduate selected by the university. sonoko mitsui is an exemplary japanese artist. her introspection lies in the formulations pertaining to the organic through seemingly simple, and deductive means. derivative of her cultural, religious background, the adoration of deity in nature, sonokos installation bring to mind growth and displacement. her sculptural multiples grow over floor, wall and ceiling like a colony of parasite or fungus spores. these carefully crafted objects do more than displace space, to articulate a formal directive, they assume a certain logic and composition that permeates throughout the natural world.
